Abstract

The Activity of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Region in the Context of Great Power Rivalry

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 “new Russia” recognised East-Central Europe as an area of its vital interest. The Russian Federation has never abandoned the desire to restore its influence over the region – the belt of countries from the Baltic to the Black Sea that had so often been the victims of Russian expansion in decades past and that have strengthened their sovereignty since the beginning of the nineties. To reach its goals in the region the Russian Federation has applied a combination of policies, ranging from economic pressure and diplomatic isolation to sophisticated cultural diplomacy. In the passing decade Russian policy toward East-Central Europe has developed significantly and the role of this region has been reinforced in the strategy of the Russian Federation, mainly as a result of the accession of the region states to Western institutions and their economic prosperity.
