Abstract

Nationalism and Politics – The Case of Western Ukraine

This work is an attempt to analyse the sources of popularity of the “Svoboda” party in the Western Ukrainian society. In their programme, “Svoboda” was referring openly to the tradition of integral nationalism, which has roots in the ideology created by Mykola Mykhnovsky and Dmytro Dontsov and was propagated during the inter-war period by the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) led by Stepan Bandera. Ukrainian integral nationalism found a continuation in the armed activities of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UIA) during the Second War World. In this paper an attempt was made to solve the question of whether “Svoboda” is an artificial construct that was created for the purpose of undermining the Ukrainian national idea or whether it was an answer to the needs of the local groups that were influenced by OUN-UIA ideology.
