Abstract

Ukraine Between Dysfunctional Democracy and Unconsolidated Authoritarianism

The main thesis of this research is an analysis of the political situation in Ukraine after the declaration of independence taken by „Kiev” 20 years ago. The authors intention was presentation of complexity political conditions in independent Ukraine. For example currently, problems still dog politics in the country. Former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko is on trial over a gas deal with Russia made in 2008. The US and EU have expressed concern that the trial may have political motives „behind the scenes”. Secondly, the Orange Revolution stimulated expectations of transformation and democratization in the country. However, nothing like that doesn’t come, and political circumstances, which takes place in the last months shows, that disappointment with widespread corruption and political instability has become a feature of political life in the country, two decades after breaking away from the Soviet Union. Today, Ukraine is facing many political, environmental, economic, demographic and other troubles. A lot of depends of whether the freedom of speech and press as equal access to all different sources of information are really granted and guaranteed. Otherwise the secret ballot in a policy state leads to dictatorship. Only coordinated efforts of opposition branches, public opinion, and international control even on local levels can prevent a negative tendencies and make political process transparent and honest.
